NHAI's new 16-km expressway will help reduce traffic on Delhi-Gurugram route

With an aim to decongest traffic on busy Delhi-Gurugram Expressway, National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) will soon construct 16-km new expressway in Gurugram to provide a Ring Road outside the city from the eastern side. The legal hurdles coming in the way of this project have been successfully tackled by the state government and it is now in the process of interacting with Union road transport and construction minister Nitin Gadkari. The new expressway will be named Greater Southern Peripheral Expressway (GSPE), which will connect Ambience Mall on Delhi-Gurugram Expressway to NSG Camp Maneser on NH-8, crossing three major roads, MG Road, Gurugram-Faridabad Expressway and Gurugram-Sohna Road.

Haryana PWD minister Rao Narbir Singh said that the NHAI has completed the detailed project report (DPR) according to the master plan 2031 for this expressway to give a Ring Road to Gurugram city. “The land owners whose lands were coming under this project had taken a stay order from Punjab and Haryana High Court. Those cases have been settled and stay order cancelled. Now, the path is clear to build the expressway,” Singh added. After the DPR, Haryana government has passed an order to acquire land under section 4 of the Punjab Land Preservation Act for the project and Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) has been assigned to acquire the land. “We have discussed this matter with Union minister Nitin Gadkari and are hopeful of getting funds from the Centre as well. The acquisition of land will start after the central government nod,” Singh said. “The six-lane expressway will be built from the eastern side of the city and there will be an option to widen it according to congestion on stretches,” said an official of NHAI, requesting anonymity. This expressway will have significant importance due to its route. It will share the burden of three major roads, which currently culminate at Delhi-Gurugram Expressway. The commuters travelling from Dhaula Kuan and IGI airport and wanting to go directly to Manesar can opt new expressway. Even those commuters wanting to go to Mehrauli on MG Road or Sohna Road can also take that rout for hassle-free driving. According to officials, over four lakh office goers of South Delhi, Dwarka and other parts of Delhi, going towards Manesar and Gurugram-Sohna Road take Delhi-Gurugram Expressway. As per the DPR, the new expressway connects Ambience Mall on Delhi-Gurugram Expressway and goes all the way to MG Road on Delhi border. It crosses Gurugram-Faridabad Expressway, Gurugram- Sohna Road after Badshahpur, Tikli, Sakatpur, Shikohpur, Naurangpur, and Manesar. This road will complement 23-km-long Dwarka Expressway to form a complete circle similar to Delhi’s Outer Ring Road. The Dwarka Expressway connects NH-8 at Shiv Murti, South West Delhi and crosses the entire Gurugram city from the western side before culminating at Kherkidaula toll plaza on NH-8. Dwarka Expressway, which was to be completed in 2012, got delayed due to land acquisition. The NHAI now claims to complete the project by March 2018. The completion of these two projects will not only ease out the traffic pressure of Delhi-Gurugram Expressway, it will also open the option of investment in real estates.
